Dramatic Smile Makeovers For Worn Teeth

Over the years, severely worn teeth can develop from continuous grinding, clenching and overexposure to highly acidic food and drinks. Not only does this contribute to an aged appearance and gummy smile, it could lead to severe biting problems as well. Several treatment options are available for building up worn down teeth. The most commonly used correction methods include veneers, porcelain crowns, bonding and gum contouring. In particular, the placement of veneers on the surface of the tooth is rapidly becoming one of the most popular approaches for restoring worn teeth.

These thin laminates are custom made to match the shape and color of the surrounding teeth. Often made of porcelain, veneers are very durable. Despite their inherent strength, however, nighttime protective guards are recommended to avoid veneer surface damage in those cases where worn teeth are caused by grinding while sleeping (e.g., bruxism).

In more extreme cases of worn teeth, multiple crowns may have to be placed so as to retain a normal bite. i.e., If only the worn teeth are made longer, contact between the teeth may be restricted to the worn restoration area. To overcome this problem, several teeth may have to be lengthened with crowns. This will provide for a more balanced bite when you close your mouth or chew.

Among the simplest of procedures for restoring worn teeth includes the bonding of composite resins. Unlike the placement of veneers, this treatment can be administered in a single visit and is completely non-invasive (i.e., no tooth substance is removed).

Finally, gum lifts and reshaping are often applied in conjunction with tooth restorations. The removal of excess gum will expose more tooth length while preparing for the placement of veneers or crowns.

Because of the complexities involved in bite balance, gum shaping, and overall aesthetics, Dr. Sajoo encourages you to take advantage of our free initial consultation.
