Extensive Check-ups for Cavity Prevention

Tooth decay (or dental caries) may occur when bacteria in plaque acts on food left in the mouth. Acids are then produced from the bacteria that attack the tooth enamel. This decay can affect any part of a tooth from the chewing surface to the roots below the gum line. Eventually, the tooth rots or decomposes often resulting in the formation of a cavity in the tooth. This hole provides a well-protected nesting place for more plaque and food, which further spreads decay.

If left untreated, this cavity will continue to grow until bacteria reaches the pulp in the tooth; this could cause painful toothache and ultimately an infection. Our goal at Smiles by Design is to preserve the remaining healthy tooth and prevent downstream complications.

Occasionally a cavity may spread to deeper parts of the tooth without any symptoms. In situations where it affects the nerve, you may experience a sudden sharp and throbbing pain. To avoid this, we strongly suggest you contact us for a check-up.

Among the earliest symptoms of a cavity is a sensitivity to hot or cold as well as sweet food or drinks. Once a hole has formed, stuck food will indicate the presence of a cavity. If you allow the cavity to spread, visible pits and holes will form.

Tooth decay and cavities can be prevented in many ways. One of the simplest ways is to avoid foods which contain high amounts of sugar and starch. Good oral hygiene, consisting of proper brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least daily, can also minimize the causes of cavities. Other remedies are found in our saliva that counteracts the acids formed in plaque. Chewing sugarless gum is one way to arouse this flow of saliva.

Finally, routine check-ups and professional cleanings may help you avoid tooth decay. To effectively know the condition of your teeth, we recommend regular dental examinations and cleaning every six months. This will help avoid some of the serious consequences from neglected tooth decay including root canal infection, permanent deterioration of decayed tooth substance and even loss of some teeth.
