Lasting Restorations For Chipped & Cracked Teeth

According to the American Association of Endodontists, our susceptibility to cracks and chips is on the rise as we live longer and more stressful lives. Much of this is attributed to chip and crack inducing habits such as grinding, clenching and chewing on hard objects. Cracks, in particular, can have painful repercussions if not detected early. Oftentimes, the fracture reaches the pulp where chewing can inflame the nerve connecting tissue. In some cases, the pulp will become damaged to the point that an infection spreads to the bone and gum tissue.

Symptoms of undetected cracks include high tooth sensitivity to temperature extremes and irregular pain when chewing. Treatments vary dependent on the severity and location of the crack. If it extends from the chewing surface of the tooth vertically towards the root, the injured pulp may have to be treated through a root canal. Since cracks cannot be healed, Dr. Sajoo will likely opt to place a crown in this case so as to avoid further separation along the crack.

In the event your tooth is chipped, an immediate appointment with Dr. Sajoo is advised to avoid the progression of fracture lines within the chipped tooth. This, in turn, can cause further chipping and discomfort. Treatments for chipped teeth most often include the placement of crowns, veneers or composite (tooth colored) fillings. This allows you to retain the tooth while dramatically improving its appearance. At Smiles by Design, Dr. Sajoo can ensure you that all restorations apply materials that are natural looking, undetectable, and blend well with surrounding teeth. Whether we opt to use composite resin fillings, veneers or crowns, you can also be assured of a solid support structure for the damaged tooth. If extensively chipped, a root canal may be required.

Once treated, most cracked and chipped teeth continue to function and provide years of comfortable chewing. To find out more about your restoration alternatives, we encourage you to take advantage of our free initial consultation.
